Soap and skincare MOQ: what determines a minimum order?
MOQ means minimum order quantity. For a manufacturing project, the useful question is not just “how many?” but “how many of which formula, size and packaging configuration?”
Clarify what the minimum applies to
A minimum may apply to a formula, a production batch, a fragrance variant, a container or printed packaging. Ask the manufacturer to specify the unit and configuration. A total order split across several products is not necessarily the same as one production run.
Formula and production affect the answer
Different products require different equipment, materials and processing steps. A custom ingredient or a change in colour or fragrance may alter the production plan. Starting from an available formula can simplify development, but it does not guarantee a particular minimum.
Packaging has its own requirements
A stock bottle, custom mould, printed carton and decorated container may each have different supplier requirements. Discuss packaging early so the finished product and the pack can be planned together. Ask what happens to any unused components and who is responsible for storing them.
Keep the first project focused
Consider starting with one clearly defined product before adding several sizes or fragrances. Discuss stock packaging and available development routes with the team. The purpose is to make the brief manageable, not to promise that every project can be produced in a small quantity.

Finished soap, skincare and soap noodles are different product categories; a minimum stated for raw soap base should not be applied to finished bars.

Can I combine different fragrances into one MOQ?
Ask the team to assess each variant and the total production plan. Do not assume different fragrances count as one batch.
Is packaging MOQ always the same as product MOQ?
No. Packaging suppliers and production batches can have different requirements, which should be confirmed together.
