How to store bar soap in the bathroom

Choose a dish that drains

Use a slotted, ridged or perforated dish that lifts the bar above collected water. Empty the tray underneath when needed. A decorative bowl can work only if it does not leave the bar sitting in a puddle. Solid-bar manufacturer Ethique recommends drainage and airflow between uses. [1]

Find the dry part of the bathroom

Place the dish outside the direct shower spray and away from a tap that drips. Check the location after someone has showered: if the dish is full of water, move it. A shelf that looks dry before a shower may still get soaked during use.

In a humid bathroom, leave room around the bar and use the bathroom’s normal ventilation after bathing. Avoid stacking wet bars together. Choose a dish that is large enough for the whole bar without crowding it against the sides.

Keep the holder easy to clean

Wash away accumulated soap residue and rinse the dish regularly. Check that its drainage holes are clear. Let washable accessories dry too: a wet pouch resting in a wet tray defeats the purpose of a draining holder.

Make the routine simple enough to maintain. A removable tray can be easier to empty than a deep container fixed to a wall.

Use a closed case for transport, not wet storage

Let the bar dry before closing a travel case. If you have to pack soon after a shower, drain it as well as possible and take it out to dry at your destination. Ethique’s bar-care advice likewise cautions against sealing wet bars in containers. [1]

Store unopened bars according to the label

Keep spare bars in their original protective packaging, away from splashes, direct sunlight and heat. Follow the manufacturer’s storage instructions and shelf-life information. Different formulas and packaging systems have different needs; there is no single storage life for every bar.

For brands: make care instructions part of the product

Useful packaging does more than look attractive. Include a short care message customers can follow, such as “Allow to drain and dry between uses.” During development, evaluate the bar with the kind of dish and packaging your customer will actually use.
