OEM, ODM and OBM: choosing a route for your soap or skincare brand

Choose a manufacturing approach around the formula, development work and responsibilities your project needs. The initials are useful shorthand, but an agreed project scope is what makes the work clear.

OEM: manufacturing to an agreed specification

OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. For a soap or skincare project, it commonly describes production to an agreed customer specification. You may bring an existing formula, a product reference or detailed requirements. The manufacturer still needs to review feasibility, materials and the production process before confirming the scope.

ODM: development support from the manufacturer

ODM stands for Original Design Manufacturer. It commonly includes a manufacturer’s formulation or product-development input. A project may start from an available formula or require adaptations. It does not automatically mean that every option is ready to produce immediately, or that the minimum order is always lower.

Bangkok Soap also uses NPD, or New Product Development, for projects involving new product development. Explain what you want to achieve so the team can advise on the appropriate route.

OBM: the brand-owner role

OBM stands for Original Brand Manufacturer and refers to a business producing and selling under its own brand. It describes the brand-owner role rather than a formula-development method. A brand project should still set out who handles manufacturing, packaging, distribution and marketing.

Agree the details before approving a sample

  • What formula or reference is the starting point?
  • Which changes are included in development?
  • Who owns the formula, artwork and tooling, and what exclusivity is agreed?
  • Who supplies packaging and approves the final specification?
  • Which assessments and documents are included?
  • What needs approval before production scheduling?

Confidentiality and ownership are different matters. Confirm both in the project agreement rather than assuming the initials settle them.

Prepare a clear first brief

Describe the product type, target customer, intended market, desired feel, fragrance, shape or fill size, packaging and expected quantity. Attach a reference if it helps explain your idea. Common questions

Does ODM always have a lower MOQ?

No. The formula, materials, packaging and production requirements determine what is feasible for the project.

Does confidentiality mean I own the formula?

No. Ownership, usage rights, exclusivity and confidentiality should each be agreed explicitly.
